from Days 1 through 9

DAY-BY-DAY GAME RECAP
Day 11, 12/09/00, 1:15 PM: ZOE IS CAUGHT: Seeking a top hat to complete the Day Task, Zoe is cornered inside a tuxedo store on E. 86th St. Hunter Mark Tafoya enters the store and secures the capture, earning the $10,000 grand prize bounty. "I felt a lump in my thoat. It was defeat," Zoe recalled a few hours after the catch. "Chris and Jason said it was almost a relief, but it wasn't a relief for me. I wanted to win." Day 11 Recap

Day 10, 12/08/00, 9:00 PM: Now alone on the streets, Zoe sneaks into the Lower East Side to photograph Presidential street signs. After nightfall, the pressures of the game get to her. "I'm definitely on my path to lunacy," she says. Day 10 Recap

Day 9, 12/07/00, 9:40 AM: JASON IS CAUGHT: Passing by the Blue Note jazz club in the West Village, Jason runs into the webHunter and meets his doom just 12 hours after boldly predicting victory. "I had the attitude that I already had the $10,000. There were just three simple things I had to avoid -- getting caught, breaking the rules, and letting Zoe get more points than me. Obviously, I didn't avoid them all." Day 9 Recap

Day 8, 12/06/00, 3:00 PM: With only two Fugitives standing, Zoe and Jason steer clear of the Upper West Side daily neighborhood as much as possible. Unexpected humor emerges. Jason: "I just saw a guy fall down and it's not as funny as it is in the cartoons or movies. Also, I bought some socks, which is really exciting." Day 8 Recap

Day 7, 12/05/00, 12:01 PM: CHRIS IS CAUGHT. Apprehended outside Tweed Courthouse near City Hall, Chris becomes the first Fugitive to be apprehended. "You know how they say that when criminals finally get caught they say they're relieved to be off the streets?" he says after the capture. "That's how I feel right now." Day 7 Recap

Day 6, 12/04/00, 12:00 PM: Week two continues a sporty theme, as the Day Task asks Fugitives to complete athletic tasks at Chelsea Piers. Command's math-based Day Task Clue elicits this from Zoe: "Riddles suck unless they have a dirty answer." Day 6 Recap

Day 5, 12/03/00, 2:30 PM: Zoe finishes the football Day Task in Kips Bay early, then spends the rest of her day stalking celebrities. "I've been following Ben Stiller around for awhile. I'm the hunter today," she says. Day 5 Recap

Day 4, 12/02/00, 8:29 PM: Saturday in the East Village. Fugitives don't stray far from the neighborhood as hunters swarm. "I'm actually paranoid right now," Jason says. "I literally haven't left the neighborhood. I'm gonna stick it out. But there have been a couple of times where I've just run out into the middle of 2nd or 3rd Ave." Fugitives Jason and Zoe complete the Bonus Task of performing with a live mic in front of a crowd. Despite his subway juggling act, Chris' task is not accepted. Day 4 Recap

Day 3, 12/01/00, 10:59 AM: Hunters hit the streets in full force around Morningside Heights as Fugitives attend classes at Columbia University for their Day Task. Many a close encounter -- or imagined close encounter -- is had. Fugitive Chris: "I'm feeling really nervous right now. There's a lot of people looking for me." Day 3 Recap

Day 2, 11/30/00, 7:00 PM: Trapped in Hell's Kitchen, Fugitives start drinking. "I'm a little bit happier now that I have a couple of drinks in me," Fugitive Chris reports. "I think I'll continue that trend for the rest of the night." Day 2 Recap

Day 1, 11/29/00 12:28 PM: Dropoff. The Fugitives enter the game in Midtown. Evening sends them to the tree lighting at Rockefeller Center. "It's wet and cold. Now the fun begins," Fugitive Zoe says. Day 1 Recap

HIDE/SEEK/NYC NEED-TO-KNOW

DAY TASK: Fugitives are assigned a task by COMMAND that they must complete before sunset. Evidence of task completion must be delivered to a secure dropbox, where it is picked up by Hide/Seek/NYC staff. Fugitives are awarded money and points based on the order of day task completion.

EVENING TASK:
After the rigors of the day task, Fugitives are given an evening task that often involves eating, drinking, and merrymaking. Like day tasks, evening tasks are mandatory, but the order of completion among the Fugitives does not matter.

CLUE: Before the task is revealed to the Fugitives (and on this site), clues to the task are presented.

HIDE/OUT: A safe house somewhere in Manhattan where Fugitives are permitted to spend the night. The Hide/Out is not accessible to the Fugitives between 9:00 AM and 11:00 PM (1:00 AM on Fri. and Sat.)

It could have been yours. Here's how.

On Nov. 29, we set three Fugitives -- Zoë, Chris, and Jason -- loose on the streets of Manhattan. They left their everyday lives behind for a chance to win ten grand.

To win the money they had to stay on the streets for 17 days, completing tasks we assigned them and remaining one step ahead of each other and a pack of pursuers.

They didn't do it. Pursued by the general public, Chris fell on Day 7. Jason met his end Day 9. And then, on Day 11, Zoe zigged when she should have zagged and got snagged.
What's next for our intrepid Fugitives and Hide/Seek? Stay tuned to the site.

PLAY ONLINE AND WIN

Anyone in New York City could have hit the streets to track down the fugitives. But if you weren't in NYC, or couldn't leave the office, there was another option; track the action online and send tips to a daily webHunter, who put those tips into work in the streets.

[Command delivered the clues and tasks to webHunters at the same time they were posted on the site. WebHunters received no other information from Command. That's was up to the internet viewers.]

The viewer who submitted the tip that led to a capture, split the bounty with the webHunter who made it happen. Jeremy Howard, of Little Compton, RI, won $250 by sending in the tip that helped led the webHunter to Chris, the first Fugitive captured. NYU undergrad Heide Agas submitted a tip that helped lead to the capture of Jason, netting her $500.
