TODAY'S ACTION
as reported live on 12.07.00 by Command

Day 9, 10:52 PM:
Night's end. Dedication of the day to Jason, one tough Fugitive. See you tomorrow.

Day 9, 10:09 PM:
Remember when Jason and Chris were still playing this game? Command gets the urge to talk to them every 90 minutes or so, dials six numbers, and then hangs up. No pickup for Zoe tonight. She's tough. She's an elfin crackerjack.

Day 9, 7:48 PM:
Now she's gone,
And I'm out with a friend,
With lips full of passion,
And coffee in bed.
Command is done with Dylan for the day. Squeeze is where it's at.

Day 9, 3:50 PM: Turns out the olfactory characteristics of karma are legend: Good karma smells of strawberries and fresh cream, and bad karma smells distinctly of bitter almonds.

Day 9, 3:03 PM: Old habits die hard: Jason calls in to report his location -- from his apartment at 57th and 7th in Brooklyn. Command tells Jason to please get some sleep.

Day 9, 12:45 PM: Zoe herself has the aural halo of good karma. Part of her elfin mystique. Can you smell karma?

Day 9, 12:25 PM: Punishment, of course, is a karmic concept. Command has no hand in cosmic arbitration.

Day 9, 12:15 PM: We're cracking down on the webHunter. From now on, he/she will be utterly reliable in providing updates on his/her location once an hour, on the half-hour. You can keep track of the blossoming personalities in Today's webHunter. If there's no sparkle to the narrative, the punishment will fit the crime.

Day 9, 11:20 AM: Warriors...Come out to pla-ay...

Day 9, 11:15 AM: Jason's gone, like a train. No more of his cherubic face in early morning car rides. No more of his keen observations to fluff our Fugitive Log. He says he spent a lot of time in a karaoke joint on the Bowery. A real Sherpa, he.

Day 9, 10:40 AM: We have Jason here at Command. We are "debriefing." The man has a beer in hand. He's looking forward to returning to his girlfriend. Ah, the life of the Fugitive. He has been rehabilitated.

Day 9, 10:30 AM: WebHunter Mark Tafoya's capture of Fugitive Jason has been confirmed. We repeat, Jason has been captured. Zoe is all alone. L'etranger.

Day 9, 9:40 AM: There is a developing situation. Command has dispatched someone to investigate.

Day 9, 9:05 AM: FUGITIVE DROPOFFS: Jason, Greenwich St. and 7th Ave., 8:55; Zoe, Grove St. and 7th Ave., 8:58.

Day 9, 8:45 AM: Command prepares to resume updates.

DAY 9 RUNDOWN

Goodbye, Grandma. It's Zoe's game now.

Fugitive Jason’s quest for $10,000 ended in a high-speed, on-foot chase through the streets of Greenwich Village this morning, as webHunter Mark Tafoya tracked him down. The Fugitive known as "Grandma" to fellow Fugitives Zoe and Chris is done.

Jason’s capture, which unfolded in dramatic fashion just after 9:30 AM, came close on the heels of Fugitive Chris’s downfall on Tuesday. Now, nine days into the 17-day contest, only Fugitive Zoe, and her $10,000 bounty, remain.

"I had the attitude that I already had the $10,000," Jason said upon his return to Hide/Seek Command. "There were just three simple things I had to avoid -- getting caught, breaking the rules, and letting Zoe get more points than me. Obviously, I didn’t avoid them all."

Today's capture earned Manhattan-resident Tafoya $1,000, which he will split with web Viewer and NYU senior Heide Agas who sent him an email tip that helped him track Jason down.

Although pleased with his early success, Tafoya was not satisfied with a single catch. "I still have all day and I’m gonna get Zoë," Tafoya said after the catch. "I want to win that ten thousand."

If Zoë evades capture for the next 9 days, she’ll take home the $10,000 prize that Tafoya and thousands of others covet.

Is she nervous? After Jason’s apprehension this morning, she used all of her scheduled call-ins to taunt her hunters with modified Bob Dylan songs, an allusion to the morning’s Dylan-based Clue.

The Clue, sung to the tune of Dylan’s "The Times They Are A-Changin'," charged the Fugitives to organize and stage a protest outside a New York University building. Both Jason and Zoe acted quickly -- perhaps too quickly. Jason was nabbed on the way to drop off his evidence at the Drop/Box. The task was immediately aborted after Tafoya procured Jason’s Fugitive ID.

Here are the capture details:
  • Jason was on his way to drop off evidence of Day 9 Task completion. Walking west on W. 3rd Street, a trumpet’s cry from the Blue Note jazz club, he was pondering where to seek shelter for the rest of the day.

  • At the same time, webHunter Tafoya was walking east on W. 3rd. Tafoya, who lives in upper, upper Manhattan but says he knows the Village like the back of his hand, immediately recognized Jason by his eyeglasses. He stared through them, and saw the fear of a Fugitive who knew his time was up. "Excuse me!" Tafoya yelled from a distance.

  • Jason knew he was in trouble. But he wasn’t going to go down without a fight. He darted towards the busy traffic along 6th Ave., desperate to keep Tafoya outside of the 5-foot radius necessary for capture. A high-speed foot chase followed for half a block. But Tafoya moved too fast. He closed ground quickly, and bagged Fugitive #2 near the corner of W. 3rd and 6th Ave. Jason handed over his Fugitve ID, Tafoya called Command, and Command hit the scene to confirm. Indeed, the end had come for Jason.

The chase for Zoe is still on. Catch her if you can. Day 10 resumes on the Lower East Side.

Subject: maybe i'm not reading into the clue enough

hmm ... maybe to go to NYU, find some students, make some signs and protest something? it's a big thing at NYU, so who knows! maybe i'll have to get to class early to see if i can see them. heh.

perfect places to hang out would either be in front of the library (right by the park on west 4th) or perhaps in front of main building (on washington pl, east of the park).

just a suggestion. watch me be wrong! good luck either way.

My guess is to go to NYU in the area of Washington Square Park. Look for
either protesters, or fugitives that are trying to solicit students to hold up signs. Good luck.

Go to Washington Square Park's Dry Fountain and look for them with maybe a sign of some sort.

Good idea. FYI, Carmine Street between Varrick and 6th has a ton of crap that I think Zoe would like. I'd stick my nose there sometime today.
